Three week Themeatic Unit on the Byzantine Empire
This is a unit plan I made for teaching sixth grade students about the importance and impact of the Byzantine Empire (500 AD-1453 AD). This assignment had five parts to it, an introduction and summary of content, four sample lesson plans, a sample evaluation and a reflective statement on the process of creating the unit. I used this as a baseline for teaching during my student teaching this spring. Of course some adjustments had to be made because of time constants and other limited resources. The unit follows the theme of the life cycle of the phoenix. Like a phoenix, the byzantine empire rose out of the crumbling Western Roman Empire. This unit uses many of the pedagogical techniques learned during my methods course at NC State University.
I think this assignment was a good assignment. It was truly challenging to create a unit completely from scratch. I was able to make an ideal unit that utilized all the 21st century skill that we have been learning over the past year or so. I was also interesting to see the unit that I could make with out restrictions and then learn the how the unit changed based on what was practical. These is a good representation of my lesson planning skills and creativity. The evaluation was my favorite part other the lesson and definitely something I plan to use in the future.

Here there are four complete lesson plans to give you a better idea of what a day in my classroom might look like.

Here is the evaluation I created for this unit. I really like this evaluation method because a one could be created for every unit and eventually turn into and authentic study guide for end of course exams.

In this section I reflected on the whole process of creating the unit, what I would have changed about the assignment and any other comments on the Thematic Unit Project
