I do believe that global issues should have a place in school curriculum. I have primarily taught social studies, where global issues are especially appropriate. Students always ask, “why?” Bringing globalized ideas into the classroom is a great way to give students a realistic and relatable example or perspective with which to make connections. When information is looked at, many times it can be better understood when looked at through multiple lens. Also, looking through different scopes helps to not only strengthen understanding but also to deepen understanding. The new Core Curriculum really stresses the teaching of the “WHY,” purpose behind what we are teaching. Using global issues as examples is a great way to create realistic and meaningful connections between curriculum and a students active world.
