Student Teaching
Over the last year I have spent time observing and teaching inside a real sixth grade classroom. Student teaching has been one of the most valuable experiences throughout my time at NC State. I have learned many valuable lesson regarding the difference between ideal and realistic situations, the importance of classroom and self-management and how challenging this profession can truly be. I have built relationships with my students and had to learn how to remain objective and fair. However, the biggest growth I experienced while doing my student teaching was learning how to teaching and continually make my lessons interesting and engaging for the students I am teaching.
Positive Impact On Student Learning
So demonstrate my effectiveness in the class room I was required to record data and complete an analysis to determine if my method of teaching were truly successful. The analysis consisted of a pre-assessment, authentic lesson plans based on the results of the pre-assessment and finally I was to give a post-assessment and compare the data to prove the students learned something from unit. As part of the analysis I looked at the assessment scores from the whole class and, also, the work of three individually selected students.
The unit I chose to use was my unit on the spread of Islam and the growth of the Middle East. I used a true-false assessment as a pre-assessment. They could chose Then I used several interactive lessons to teach the content about the Middle Eastren Caliphates and how Islam influenced the development of the region. The post-assessment was the pre-assessment reformatted into a multiple-choice, fill in the blank and matching assessment. When the two assessments were compared the data showed significant growth in the majority of students.
This was a good assignment because I was able to see exactly how successful my teaching actually was. It showed me that I did well, but also by completing this analysis I was able to see what I could have done differently and what I can change in the future. This assignment was a great way for me to look closer at my teaching and how the choices I make in the classroom affect my students. There were several things I would have done differently now that I can look back on the whole assignment, but I feel that will be a common feeling in the teaching profession. This assignment just goes to prove that teaching is a constant learning experience.
